What to buy before your puppy comes home

  • A crate with a divider: sized for the grown dog: the planner above gives the length
  • A harness: in today's size, adjustable
  • A collar and an ID tag: in today's size
  • A leash: about 6 feet long
  • A bed or crate pad: the same length as the crate
  • Food and water bowls
  • Puppy food: the kind your breeder or shelter was feeding, to start
  • Chew toys: a few, in different textures
  • Poop bags and an enzyme cleaner: for accidents indoors
  • A gate or a pen: to close off one room at first
  • A brush and nail clippers

For example, a medium-size puppy of 14 lb at 12 weeks will likely weigh 30 to 48 lb grown. Its list: a 36-inch crate with a divider and a 36-inch bed, a size S harness and a size S collar.

Questions

Should I buy an adult-size harness and collar now?

No. A harness or collar sized for the grown dog slips off a puppy. Buy today's size; Pupsize says about when your puppy will likely need the next one.

Should I buy a puppy-size crate?

You don't need to. A crate sized for the grown dog, with a divider, lasts its whole life: you move the divider back as your puppy grows.

What size bed should I buy?

One the same length as the crate, so it lies flat on the crate floor.
